DREAM Monitor Arm

Dream System

Dream System

Double arm

Double arm

Following on from the successful Ellipta Monitor Arm developed over a decade (licenced to Häfele globally), Charlwood Design has again committed to re-inventing the flexible workspace with the Dream Monitor Arm.

The Dream Monitor Arm system is a revolutionary new workspace system designed to adapt to a variety of different technology configurations.

Smart Phones, Tablets and Touch Screens have all interrupted the workplace landscape, and we needed to accommodate these- plus future-proof our system for any other introductions.

You no longer need to replace one product with another to adapt your work environment, in a word it is ‘flexible’.

Wesley College Mace

The Wesley College Mace has been created as a symbolic statement to mark the sesquicentenary of Wesley College in 2016. This milestone in the history of the College is being celebrated and commemorated in many ways. The Wesley College Mace is intended to be one of the lasting and more tangible legacies of 2016 as it will be symbolically and literally passed onto future generations of the Wesley College community.

It was agreed that the Wesley College Mace would need to reflect the symbols and traditions of the school, as well as reinforce Wesley’s well-known reputation as an innovator. The final design for the mace is a clear and symbolic statement and, through its bold, bright and modern look clearly signals to all that Wesley College is forward looking and has since the opening in 1866 honoured the school motto everyday – Sapere Aude – “Dare to be Wise”.

The Wesley College Mace is a bold, highly-finished and striking piece of contemporary design that pays homage to the traditional form of a mace, and yet presents as a piece of modern art. The mace is a metal club-like staff of one metre in length that elegantly tapers outwards from the tip of its base to eventually branch out in a tree-like form that cradles a glowing light source. The striking design reminds us of the story of the tree of life or read another way the guiding light through the journey of life. The Wesley College colours of purple and gold are unmissable. The staff has a gleaming gold patina that is broken only by incised decorative elements. Purple is represented in the bulb device that is both cradled in, and seemingly bursting out of the branches of the tree. This purple-coloured acrylic light source glows suggesting energy and life.

KKDU Plum Bike Trailer and Rack

Stack it, Pack it, Bike it, Love it! Thats the motto for Melbourne based startup KKDU Plum, and their first product certainly lives up to it.

Founders Astrid and Haydn Sharratt approached Charlwood Design in 2014 and engaged us to help develop a their new bike trailer. The brief was to develop a trailer that could not only haul all your “stuff”, but also double up as a fully functional shopping trolley- one that was easy and comfortable to push or pull around.

The end result is a smart system made up of two key devices- the trailer and the rack. The trailer consists of an upper and lower tub for holding anything and everything, traditionally formed tubular frame, fully adustable handle that doubles as a hitch point for towing, and a fold-away third wheel to convert it from trailer to trolley in a matter of seconds. The rack, stunningly finished in bright chrome, is designed to fit most bikes. It is also the mounting point for the quick release uni joint hitch- an incredibly simple to use design that allows the trailer to be removed from the bike effortlessly.

BAT Logic Rowing Shoe Plate

BAT Logic and Charlwood Design partnered up in 2013 to develop the innovative ShoePlate Pro QuickRelease foot plate, and have since seen the devices installed in performance rowing boats worldwide.

The click in-click out system offers rowers increased performance by enhancing leg muscle use, reducing injury through better gluteal control and enhanced stability and connection. Additionally, it also allows the user to click in and out of boats or ergometers and retain their own shoes and settings- contributing to not only an easier to use system, but also improved hygiene.

BAT Logic approached Charlwood Design to re-develop the click in and out function of the foot plate, as well as consult on material selection, tooling design and manufacturing decisions.

The end result has seen positive results worldwide, and has been installed on many winning boats at various rowing competitions and regattas. The BAT Logic team are tirelessly representing their product at most events, and the results speak for themselves.

Hydrawise HC Smart Irrigation Controller

Charlwood Design were approached by Hydrawise back in 2013 to re-design the controller housing for their Smart Watering and Irrigation system. Hydrawise had previously been using an OTS housing for their main controller unit, but after experiencing some growth, felt they needed to create something unique to represent the same level of intelligence and sophistication that their software and system design displayed.

The Hydrawise system allows users to manage their irrigation controller from anywhere worldwide using a smart device or web browser. Predictive watering adjusts schedules based on forecast temperature, rainfall probability, wind and humidity using a vast array of weather stations around the world. The system can setup for everything from a small courtyard to a large vineyard.

Our brief was to create a simple, low cost, water resistant housing that stood out from the competitors and was easy to install. The finished product met all criteria, and helped boost Hydrawise sales three fold. In addition to the controller, Charlwood Design also helped to develop the user interface for future use.

In 2016 Hydrawise was acquired by irrigation giant Hunter Industries, fantastic news for the small Australian technology start up.

Melbourne Design Week 2015 Exhibition Space

A temporary exhibition space constructed out of shipping containers for the 2015 Melbourne Design Week.

In 2015, Charlwood Design was invited by Ideas on Design to create an exhibition for the Melbourne City Square that highlighted the Victorian winners from several of last years design awards.

The brief was to create an eye catching, easy flowing exhibition space that utilized shipping containers to house the work.

The resulting exhibition was conceptualized and designed in a matter of days, and, with the help of Gavin Bufton and the Ideas on Design team, was neatly put together and installed into the space in a matter of weeks.

Oates Eazy Reach Dustpan

A simple yet functional dustpan, with an iconic form and some very clever construction methods.

Oates Clean sourced Charlwood Design to develop and design a new free-standing dustpan (also known as a lobby pan) in 2012, after the idea was conceived during a “new product” brainstorming session.

The resulting product allows users to easily sweep up their floors without having to bend over to pick up the mess. Its clean and iconic form is achieved by reducing the dustpan to a single moulded part, whilst the broom sub assembly consists of an advanced ultrasonically welded handle- avoid the use of the generic tubular steel handle seen on most of the competitors.

Elevare Shower Foot Rest

The Elevare shower foot rest is an easy, non-slip way to shave, tan, exfoliate or moisturise your legs in the shower.

Charlwood worked very closely with Elevare founder Leanne Welsh to help turn a dream into a reality.

The end product looks like an extremely simple device, yet is full of innovative thinking and careful development. The footrest simply leans into the corner of the shower, allowing the user to rest their foot on top and easily shave their legs. This prevents the user from having to bend over, lean down, balance on one leg or use a makeshift ledge whilst shaving their legs.

The Elevare project was a full service, start to finish project for Charlwood Design. We were involved from day one- from the very first sketch on a page through to the design and managing of items such as the in-store Point of Sale stand, packaging and even producing the crowd funding promotional video.

You can purchase the Elevare Shower Stool via their website elevare.com.au

Juilliard Lift No.3

Lift No.3 was developed for the St James Building re-development on the corner of Bourke and Williams St in Melbournes CBD.

Charlwood Design developed a concept based off a twisted, altered reality public transport fitout. The cage like stainless steel bar network is as intricated as it is detailed, with in-rail custom lighting specially designed and developed by Charlwood Design.

A window looks out into the Elevator shaft, where a lift riders can watch a large mural by artist Reka zip past. The stark white paneling hugs the walls, with beautifully curved corners and stainless steel trimming finishing the edges.

A completely custom COP panel was design and machined out of a solid block of aluminum, with custom buttons using the buildings font were machined out polycarbonate and polished.

Charlwood Design worked closely with the Kone Lifts to assure that all design aspects could safely be included whilst still meeting local standards and codes.

Brisbane International Tennis Trophy

Following the success of the design of the Newcombe medal Charlwood (in collaboration with R-CO brand identity) was enlisted to create a unique trophy for the Brisbane international tennis open for Tennis Australia. The striking design is crafted from machined and polished aluminium sitting atop a Perspex base.

The perpetual trophy will have winners name’s engraved each year. The design was also developed into a slightly smaller players trophy and a unique, elegant trophy for the runner’s up. Fabrication and delivery of all the pieces was also managed by Charlwood.
